Lightening Up

The Landon’s kitchen went from dreary to cheery with some expert re-arranging and a new color palette. Situated within a sweeping rural landscape, including views of the Cascade Mountains, designer Charla Ray created an inviting hub for the Landon’s love of cooking and gathering. Casual bar and eat-in-kitchen seating welcome guests to linger. The singular hanging chandelier by Feiss is lightweight with an open silhouette so as not to obscure the view. Adding a second Sub-Zero refrigerator gives guests access to all the refreshments they need without navigating through the prep fridge.

Modern Living on Elliott Bay

Inspired by this rare view of Seattle’s skyline, architect Lane Williams and contractor/homeowner Troy Adams designed and built a modern West Seattle home as stunning as its remarkable view. White Space Design Group produced the all-important visual flow with its choices of interior fixtures, finishes, and furnishings, while Spring Greenworks’ lush landscape design completed the whole.

Richard A. Fisher Architects and White Label Interiors worked with contractor Chad Stevens to create a vacation rental on two lots in Suncadia, WA, which could easily accommodate thirty people, or several families, at once. Rustic materials, like heavy timber and stone, were mixed with modern detailing to strike the right balance in the natural setting.

Modern Recreation

Adventurous clients team up with Richard A. Fisher Architects and White Label Interiors to fashion the ultimate vacation destination in Suncadia, a Washington mountain resort. By combining National Park lodge vernacular with sharply modern elements, this is “Suncadia 2.0,” a whole new twist on tradition.

The Italian countryside resort influence starts with a lush oasis of Mediterranean-style landscaping surrounding outdoor spaces designed for gathering and lingering. The state-of-the-art pool by VIP Masonry features a built-in jetted spa. The design allows a seamless covering of the pool that’s safest for children and maintains better temperature control. The evenings are lit with an elegant exterior lighting plan, including a rustic chandelier in the outdoor living and dining space and lanterns with a contemporary farmhouse ambiance.

Resort-Like Living

This modern Tuscan-influenced farmhouse featured in the 2021 Northwest Natural Street of Dreams is a dream come true for its owners. Built to host extended family and friends, every conceivable comfort and convenience creates a resort-like environment designed for comfort and relaxation.

In the living room, two Piet Boon couches from Inform Interiors are flanked by Piet Boon marble side tables on one side, and a custom “Via” side table designed by Charlie Hellstern for the ‘Loom Collection’ and built by Stusser Woodworks Inc. The large-scale painting is by Tony Scherman, and Aleph Geddis carved the wood sculptures in the corner.

A bank of black cabinets by L&Z Specialties match custom-colored Blue Star range for modern flare. Stunning extra honed Calacatta Daltile installed by Alpha StoneWorks features beautifully crafted 4  linear ledge that draws eye to custom corbels supporting classic arch housing Vent-A-Hood. Rejuvenation Mission unlaquered brass cabinetry hardware is repeated on the more traditional (unseen) white cabinets opposite. Kohler Whitehaven sink from Ferguson. Arlene ditched low-quality cabinets and replaced flipper’s “hideous” wood floors with herringbone oak floors by Champion Hardwoods to better match original floors in adjacent dining room now made more accessible and alluring through a 5  wide opening.

Courtyard Oasis

An awkward previous kitchen remodel of this 1940s West Hills home got a bold makeover by Lord Interior Design, who paid homage to the homeowners’ stint in Melbourne, Australia. There, historic homes welcome visitors through hospitably designed courtyards and modern architectural additions reside happily alongside the past.

The “wow element” in the kitchen, says Kowalski, is the Pental quartzite slab, which covers the backsplash behind the stove, and is accented with a gorgeous black metal hood, with inset Vent-A-Hood, flanked by sconces from Arteriors. Brass accents, including a Brizo faucet and pendants by Circa Lighting, warm the space, alongside the walnut endgrain butcher block counter by Grothouse that wraps the end of the island.

The homeowners had always wanted a blue kitchen. The dusty robin’s egg blue, a custom color from Benjamin Moore, compliments the orange stucco exterior of the house visible from several views. “It’s cheerful enough that it won’t blend into Portland’s often gray skies, but it has enough gray that it doesn’t feel like a color-crayon version,” says designer Charla Ray.

After eight years of living in their 1923 Laurelhurst Bungalow this young family of five hired Allisen Merino Aja of Introspecs of Portland to create a more family-friendly kitchen. Introspecs teamed with Olson and Jones Construction for the perfect collaboration.

Glossa customized the warm grey color – a hard-wearing conversion varnish by Morgan’s Fine Finishes. “With the lighter countertop and statement backsplash (“Akira” by Sonoma Tilemakers), the kitchen doesn’t feel too heavy. The new kitchen has creamy Shaker-style cabinetry and brass accents, including pulls from House of Antique Hardware, an unlacquered brass kitchen faucet by Kallista, and picture lights found at Visual Comfort.
