Doorway to Heaven

Designer: Richard Landon, CMKBD
spaceplanner.com

By relocating the kitchen, Richard Landon, CMKBD made room for so much more in this house: an entry hallway, coat closet, and this stunning powder room. The vaulted ceilings and walls are swathed in venetian plaster, providing a dramatic backdrop for the vanity, composed of a bronze-mirrored cabinet that reflects the walnut floor.

In this bathroom remodel by Kirsten Conner and co-designer Richard Landon, CMKBD, the duo drew upon water-worn rocks their clients saw while hiking. A sculptural soaking tub represents one “stone,” as is the quartz-topped oval shower seat, wrapped in shower glass represents another other stone in the stream. Additional nature-infused accents include porcelain tile that evokes birch wood, the blues of the shower tile, and mountain motif wallpaper.

This remodel aimed to create “the style and impact of a powder room without sacrificing the functionality of a full bath,” says Amanda George. After the clients explained how important their garden became during the pandemic, George sourced an innovative wall covering that is waterproof for the shower, yet continuous like wallpaper for an immersive effect.

Judith Wright Sentz, CKBD could not move any walls when it came to the remodel of an outdated kitchen in a 1906 home. Sentz reworked the layout for modern amenities, maximizing storage in a suite of custom cabinetry, including leaded glass uppers that display cherished collections. Soapstone counters, living brass hardware and faucets, and a custom molded arch above a stained-glass window maintain the vintage charm.

In order to temper the ceiling volume of this capacious kitchen and blend it with the nearby living spaces, designers Richard Landon, CMKBD and Kirsten Conner specified floating soffits over an island that welcomes guests. Artful interventions conceal the room’s hardworking components, like ovens, refrigerator, stove ventilation, and even the cooktop surface.
